One Times Square
New York, New York
One Times Square, built in 1904 by the New York Times as their headquarters and at the time acknowledged as the second tallest building in the world, has been the center of New York City’s New Year’s festivities with the world famous ball drop tradition since 1907.
The building has changed hands and uses over the years most recently becoming an electronic billboard of epic proportions. When Building Owners, Jamestown Properties and Sherwood Equities, Inc., decided there would be more signage and taller larger mast for the ball drop they contacted Mackenzie Keck for the construction management assignment. Having worked with MK on another iconic Times Square project, M&M’s World, a store on multiple levels at 1600 Broadway a new Sherwood Equities, Inc. building, the choice was obvious.
The project includes extensive structural reinforcement, electrical and mechanical upgrades, new observation level at 339’, 35’ x 50’ sign and single piece 30” x 140’ mast which tethers and guides the 12’ Waterford Crystal and Philips LED ball.
